As an Iraq dilapidated I was skeptical about watching this at first, thinking that it would be a “Hollywoodized” version of the war. Then a buddy of mine told me it was by far one of the greatest shows he’s ever seen, so I gave it a go. Halfway through the first episode I was awestruck. Like the title of my review states, this prove is brutal, relentless, and above all AUTHENTIC. Though I was with the Army, our job was very similar to these Marines in that we rode around in Humvees searching for the dreadful guys.

Anyone who has served in Iraq in a combat role will recount to these Marines all-too-easily. Well talk the same, have the same frustrations with the chain-of-command and thought our mission some days (though thankfully my unit did not have anyone like “Captain America”), and deal with the same issues regarding supplies, lack of sleep, and fighting an enemy who the day previously may have been begging you for food.

Some viewers may be turned off by the vulgar vulgarity and profanity, but fact is that is the device most “grunts” talk. And I consider every Platoon or Squad in theater has its enjoy “CPL Pearson.” Fact of the matter is, none of us are saints and war does bring out mankind at both its best and its worst. “Generation Extinguish” shows both sides to the Marines in the rawest sense. One thing I like is that it does not attempt to bewitch a political stance one method or the other on the war. Some may opinion the series as anti-war, given the scheme some of the Marines put a question to their mission and why they are there. But again that is another reality of this war.

I never plan I would ever want to gaze a movie or series about Iraq, however this is by far one of the best series I have ever seen, period! For anyone who is a broken-down, knows a used, or objective wants to know what the war over in Iraq is really like, “Generation Raze” is a must search for!

This HBO series is amazing. It captured the lawful meaning of being in the military. The political internal battle is captured with large affects. The series reflects the bond soldiers make with each other that no civilian can EVER experience. This is contrivance we bond for a lifetime and fight for our country. This is the military and a warrior in action on every level.

The writers, producers and actors did an outstanding performance in capturing the truth.

My three stars are based on the following–four stars for this memorable film–two stars for the narrate and sound quality of the DVD. Some of the other reviewers will contemplate my technical “two stars” to be pleasurable, and I will not argue with

them.

I first saw this landmark sci/fi classic when I was younger than Jimmy Hunt, the lead actor in “Invaders”. Like many other “baby boomers”, I remember the experience very well. It wasn’t the Martians who bothered me–it was the conception that your beget loving parents could suddenly become so “different”, not to mention friends and neighbours. This is a very monstrous premise that reached its peak a couple of years later in the new “Invasion of the Body Snatchers”.

Inevitably, the film is now dated in a number of ways–the “zippers” on the backs of the Martians are often mentioned–but it quiet has power too. First of all, Jimmy Hunt’s performance–here is a child actor who is totally believable, and his efforts to convince people of the unthinkable are compelling. Children who are not taken seriously–an stale theme that is serene relevant. Arthur Franz and Helena Carter are standard 50s leads, sympathetic but bland, but gaze out for Leif Erickson as our hero’s “Dad”–the scene where he comes attend home a “changed man” mild packs a wallop ( literally as well as figuratively ) .

Buy,Download, Or Stream Invaders from Mars! Click Here

As others have illustrious, Menzies gave this film a terrific” look–that hill with the broken fence, the swirling sand, the irregular music–this is an image that has stayed with me most of my life.

The “Martian Brain” may behold a puny indecent today, but the belief of worthy intelligence is a mainstay in science fiction, and this creature has numerous filmic descendants–the “brainy alien” in “Independence Day”, another more original “invasion” comes to mind.

One jam I have always had with this movie–and it is a current experience in 50s sci/fi films–is an excessive reliance on stock footage. I guess it helped with the budget, but all those “military training” films that are woven into the narrative could have been edited. OK–the troops are coming to kick Martian butt–we find it!

It is good to say that this is one of the most influential sci/fi movies of all time. Accurate it does not compare in quality to some other 50s classics–”The Day the Earth Stood Unexcited “,

“The War of the Worlds”, “Forbidden Planet” for example. Nevertheless, it is a movie that is embedded in the consciousnesses of many people of my generation–the saucer landing, the horrified dinky boy, the odd hill where people disappear–all quite unforgettable.

Sadly, I must agree with the negative reviews of this DVD’s recount quality–when you mention “50th Anniversary Special Edition” etc. and look that the company responsible is Image–you have high expectations. I did not anticipate so many lines and general “wear and trudge”. If this was the best print available, it is dismal. If anything, the nice screen and the fascinating booklet add to the disappointment of the disc itself.

Bottom line–even with the visual shortcomings of the DVD, no serious sci/fi collector can leave this title out of his or her collection.

I was very enraged when this DVD came out, having some time ago select a cheap copy from one of those bargain-DVD companies. And while this is certainly an improvement over the grainy print I owned, I have to say I’m a itsy-bitsy disappointed that the film unexcited isn’t in gargantuan shape. A great fragment of the outdoor scenes are delicate shadowy, making it hard at times to screech what is going on. Some scratches and minor imperfections are to be expected (even though, with today’s film restoration technology, I assume even these can be fixed) . And to be graceful, this was a low-budget film that may never have looked that stout. I guess I was honest hoping for more.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Invaders from Mars! Click Here

Now, a word about the two versions of the film on this disc. I don’t want to give away the ending(s) to anyone who hasn’t seen it, but let’s unbiased say the unique U.S. ending has been considered by many fans to be a “cop out” ending. The British version does away with that, as well as the ridiculously long montage that proceeds it. But here’s an irregular thing: I unexcited mediate I lift the more ambigious U.S. ending. It’s impartial more…I don’t know….FUN.

So maybe this is the best version of INVADERS FROM MARS we’ll ever win. It’s a fun movie, a minor classic of the beloved genre of 50’s sci-fi films. But it does in fact pale (both the film itself and the transfer) beside other acknowledged classics of that era.

Finally, after all this time, Warner Brothers have advance to their senses. On October 7th, we will be treated to a heftly helping of one of the greatest Christmas films to ever grace the silver veil…………in WIDESCREEN.

I was extremely disappointed with the previous DVD release of this film which contained a pan & scan presentation and nothing more than a theatrical trailer in the extras department.

What we have here is a special edition of this large movie, which will own audio commentary from both Beverly D’Angelo and Chevy Scramble, a “making of” featurette, as well as other stocking stuffers which have yet to be disclosed at this indicate time.

Being a enormous fan of this movie, I honestly can’t wait for this release. “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” has become a holiday tradition in my home, and to be able to peep it the scheme it was intended to be seen is truly a treat for me.

Aside from the features of the disk, the film itself is the correct gift. One of the funniest movies today which peaceful withstands the test of time even 15 years later. The premise is simple. Clark W. Griswold (Chevy Perambulate) is hell zigzag on having an old family Christmas in his home, relatives and all. Of course, the hilarity kicks in when things initiate to go awry. There are so many hilarious scenes in this movie, it would be difficult to list them all. You have everything from an electrocuted cat, to a house with the brightest Christmas light show known to man. Let’s not forget the dried up turkey, the saucer sled and the dog/squirrel scramble! There’s so worthy more I could say to praise this movie, but if you haven’t already seen it, [I won't say more]

You really consume your life in your hands every time you sit down with a Chevy Traipse film. Let’s face reality here: Chevy Tear is responsible for several of the worst movies ever made. Does it bewitch more than a few minutes of viewing to search for the mind numbing folly of “Nothing But Peril,” “The Three Amigos,” and “Spies Like Us”? Roam has obvious had his truly embarrassing moments on the expansive shroud. What redeems the guy, at least in my eyes, are several films that play up to the comedian’s quick-witted alecky, deadpan delivery. “Fletch,” of course, is the gold standard of Chevy Slide films, but other movies showcase his talents fair as well. I always understanding “Deal of the Century” a classic Whisk film, as well as “Horrible Play” (although the latter was more of an ensemble describe) . But we need glimpse no further than the four National Lampoon Vacation films to truly consider the merits of this comedian turned actor. Actually, I should say three Vacation films since the second installment, where the Griswold family went on a tour of Europe, ranks as one of the most terrible stories ever attach on film. Of the three successful entries, “Christmas Vacation” is the best, perhaps even eclipsing the first movie that started it all.

Buy,Download, Or Stream National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation! Click Here

You won’t hear the familiar strains of Lindsey Buckingham’s “Holiday Road” in “Christmas Vacation,” and there are no corpses strapped to the top of a region wagon either. Instead, the film invites us into the Griswold home for an weak fashioned Christmas celebration the likes of which soon come catastrophic levels. Clark (Chevy Tear) and Ellen (Beverly D’Angelo) Griswold, along with their disinterested kids Audrey (Juliette Lewis) and Russ (Johnny Galecki), invite the whole family over for a season filled with happiness. Clark’s parents Clark Sr. (John Randolph) and Nora (Diane Ladd) point to up, as does Ellen’s folks Art (E.G. Marshall) and Frances (Doris Roberts) . And yes, even Cousin Eddie (Randy Quaid) makes an appearance to set the day. Of course, along with the family comes the inevitable frustrations and stresses everyone who has ever dealt with a reunion dreads. Clark Griswold refuses, at least initially, to topple into a morass of cynicism and despair amidst the bickering and insults. His invention of a unique milk preservative has our hero hoping his Christmas bonus will be extra expansive this year, large enough so he can install an in ground swimming pool in the backyard. Unfortunately, his boss Frank Shirley (Brian Doyle-Murray) is a scrooge with plans to acquire the company more fiscally conservative.

While he waits for the check to advance at the house, Clark embarks on several hilarious projects that haul in the belly laughs. His attempts to cloak every square lope of his house with Christmas lights is a chore requiring several falls off a ladder, pointed verbal repartees with his snotty neighbors Margo and Todd Chester (Julia-Louis Dreyfus and Nicholas Guest), and repeated failures to gather the strands to light up. The acquisition and installment of the Griswold family Christmas tree is another chore handled in Clark’s inimitable style. Imagine the pine they string up in Rockefeller Square every year, subtract roughly five feet from its height, and you have the tree Clark insists on setting up in the house. This thing is so substantial that the branches knock out the windows when Griswold cuts the rope holding the branches together. No Yuletide season, however, would be complete without a slither to the slopes for a sledding excursion, an event filled with disastrous implications when Griswold comes up with the quick-witted thought to cloak the bottom of his sled with a Teflon based substance. My common scenario involves Clark trapped in his attic for a few hours. He spends his time dressed up in women’s clothing (to cease warm) watching traditional home movies of his childhood. His abrupt plunge through the trap door had me laughing for hours afterwards.

The cast of “Christmas Vacation” gels fantastically, far better than any cast in the other three films. Kudos as always go to Randy Quaid as the squirrelly moocher Eddie; a film in this series honest wouldn’t be the same without this character driving Clark to fits of distraction. Beverly D’Angelo is one of those actresses who pick up hotter and hotter with age. The linchpin of the film is, as always, Chevy Meander as the pains prone Clark Griswold. This is a role tailor made for his imprint of clumsy, caustic humor. I don’t know about you, but Chase’s depiction reminds me in many ways of my enjoy father–he won’t listen to the advice of anyone else, his ideas are the best ideas, he tosses safety to the wind when working on risky projects, etc. But like my Dad–and probably countless other fathers–Clark is real and wants his loved ones to have amazing family memories. The film works so well, I suspect, because most of us instantly notice his character traits in our occupy beloved family patriarchs. Especially when Clark can’t stand the pressure anymore and launches into one of his over the top tirades, again a trademark of our enjoy fed up fathers.

Although the DVD carries the “Special Edition” mark, the extras are surprisingly sparse. A trailer and a commentary constitute the sum total of goodies available on the disc. Moreover, the commentary doesn’t include Chevy Whisk. At least you hear Randy Quaid, Beverly D’Angelo, Johnny Galecki, Miriam Flynn (Eddie’s wife Catherine), director Jeremiah Chechik, and producer Marty Simmons, but why no Clark W. Griswold? Perhaps he wanted too considerable money. His absence is dismal and mars what is otherwise a ample commentary track. I don’t even wait until Christmas to explore this movie; it’s fun works year round. If you haven’t seen it yet, you ought to immediately. You’ll adore it.

I don’t understand why so many people contemplate “Spider-Man 3″ is the best movie in this trilogy. I plan it was the weakest film by far. In the film, Peter Parker, a.k.a. Spider-Man (Tobey Maguire), is on top of the world…both literally and figuratively. He’s happily interested with Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst), and Spider-Man is loved and adored by all of Current York City. Unfortunately, all obedient things must advance to an slay. Mary Jane is fired from her first Broadway explain, and Peter’s freelance photography career is threatened when Eddie (Topher Grace), a rival photographer, tries to lift Peter’s boom. Things with Peter’s mature best friend, Harry (James Franco), aren’t going very well, either, and there’s also a novel villain in town: the mysterious Sandman (Thomas Haden Church), who is connected to the death of Peter’s uncle. On top of everything else, Peter encounters a queer gloomy organism that transforms into a grand shadowy Spider-Man suit, which turns out to have devastating consequences.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Spider-Man 3! Click Here

The dilemma with this movie is that there’s scheme too great going on at once, and all of the subplots and supporting characters are significantly short-changed. There were also many more boring one-liners and failed comedic moments in “Spider-Man 3″ than in the first three films, and I was extremely disappointed with the ending, which was unnecessarily depressing. I’m obvious the film’s producers are hoping for a “Spider-Man 4,” but this series unbiased needs to go away before it embarrasses itself even more.

I have to say Spider-Man 3 was another grand addition to the Spider-Man trilogy. I do have to admit I was unnerved this movie would not live up to the first two Spider-Man’s. I mean those first two were gargantuan and how could this one possibly match that? After I finished watching it I can say I was not at all disappointed. I contemplate many people were expecting this to be unbiased like Spider-Man 1 and 2. Spider-Man 3 does buy more risks than its predecessors by having more villains than usual, but It peaceful manages to entertain, spark emotion and above all inspire and bring out the kid in many of us. It is like the first two with many of the same characters returning, but where Spider-Man 3 differs is when we bag to notice the shadowy side (with the murky suit) of Spider-Man which takes the movie to a whole modern level. I have to say this movie was AWESOME. This movie truly has a mammoth stand out cast. TOBEY MAGUIRE who plays Spider-Man did a stout job as usual and brought emotion to the character that made him more human than any other hero in a silly book inspired movie. The action scenes are fabulous and they obtain you jump out of your seat a few times. All that along with the emotional lope that Spider-Man takes you on, that’s what truly makes this movie so colossal and special. This is one Roller-Coaster lumber that I highly attend any one to glance. The ending is also a surprise and I will not give it away, but I will say some people liked it and some people did not, Go figure. I did not grasp in to all the hype of this movie, or the negative things some critics had to say. I went to spy Spider-Man 3 to be entertained and I was not at all disappointed. With a expected DVD and blu-ray release date of November 2007 this is clear to be one sizable year for Spider-Man fans!

Two women. Two failed relationships. Two houses. One astronomical romantic comedy. The Holiday is the fable of two women, Iris (Kate Winslet in a poignant performance) and Amanda (Cameron Diaz), who swap houses for two weeks thinking it will attend them collect over their relationship problems. Let’s rep one thing out of the way: Yes, this is a chick flick, but a damn stunning one at that! I’m not distinguished of a fan of the genre, nor of Nancy Meyers’ films, but when I saw this in theatres with my girlfriend last December, I loved it. I idea the film would’ve lost some of its charm on second viewing, but it hasn’t lost one bit of it. With a running time of 136 minutes, you’d believe it would hump but it feels like a 90-minute film.

The film has a few surprises and most of all, a gigantic subplot around Arthur’s (mask customary Eli Wallach in a smart performance) character. The film goes aid and forth between the two relationships, the one in the UK and the one in the US, which gives it a immense rhythm. Nothing seems forced and it doesn’t plunge into the typical clichés of the genre. The dialogue is very well written, kudos to Meyers for that. The characters are interesting; Winslet (my popular actress) shines in her role as Iris, the girl who falls for the bad man. I usually avoid movies starring Cameron Diaz and/or Jack Dismal like the plague, but they were both really helpful in that one. Jude Law brought some class to his role. The supporting cast was very splendid (support your eyes inaugurate for a cameo by a eminent actor in the video store) .

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Holiday! Click Here

Overall, The Holiday is a very scrumptious film and you don’t have to like romantic comedies to bask in it. It’s closer to Something’s Gotta Give than What Women Want, and it’s grand better this draw. Check it out, you won’t be sorry!

Nancy Meyers’ “The Holiday” has been seriously dissed by most of America’s film critics–including one who suggested that any man who goes to recognize it should be forced to pay with a crucial share of his anatomy instead of money. “The Holiday” is indeed a prime example of what is condecendingly known as a “chick flick,” and it’s not a movie you can invent mountainous claims for. But “The Holiday” succeeds outstandingly in living up to its title; it provides an audience with a two-hour vacation filled with charming, likable actors playing charming, likable characters. The movie is area during the Christmas holidays in which two women with man problems–Iris (Kate Winslet), an English journalist, and Amanda (Cameron Diaz), an L.A. producer of film trailers–meet over the Internet. On a whim, they choose to switch houses for Christmas; Amanda ends up in Iris’s picture-postcard-pretty cottage in Surrey, Iris in Amanda’s luxurious, gated mansion in Beverly Hills. There, they glance unique romantic complications: Amanda with Iris’s brother Graham (Jude Law) and Iris with a film composer named Miles (Jack Gloomy) . There’s also a subplot about the friendship that develops between Iris and an elderly screenwriter played by the ragged Eli Wallach. Nothing that happens in the movie is at all unusual or consequential. I could even quibble about an inaccuracy or two in Meyers’ screenplay (Cary Grant was from Bristol in Gloucestershire, not Surrey) . But seeing “The Holiday” makes you feel blissful and light of heart, which is all it sets out to do. While the film’s appeal is necessarily greater for women, I also consider most men will glean this a more-than-serviceable date movie. Sometimes you want a movie that’s rich, gooey and sweet, that contains no intelligent edges and requires no captivating utensils for its consumption. In an increasingly abrasive world, the need for cinematic confections is greater than ever, and “The Holiday” fills that bill.

I deem a lot of reviews of this film have been unduly harsh. I have had a sparkling amount of Shakespearean exposure (I was an English major in college), and I am actually impressed with Baz Luhrmann’s interpretation of the text. Some people are so blinded by the seeming erudite stuffiness of Shakespeare’s work that they forget what this play is really about. `Romeo and Juliet’ is a teenage melodrama! With that said, this film works well.

Buy,Download, Or Stream William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet! Click Here

* To originate with, Leonardo DiCaprio and Clare Danes approach off objective factual as the “star-crossed lovers.” They handle their lines – perhaps – a bit awkwardly, and their key scenes are overacted. But as far as I’m concerned, their somewhat `poor’ performances are actually perfect. In the reality of the play – Romeo and Juliet’s behavior (though arguably passionate) is less than superior. They are young, fickle, and chunky of hormones, and what might seem like acts of heart-felt appreciate and desire are actually objective gripping explorations of subversive behavior.

* Many have lamented that the dialogue in this film (essentially) mirrors the novel text … but changing the text (in any major contrivance) would be a tall mistake. Shakespeare’s plays are not illustrious because they have a colossal account line – they are eminent because of the astonishing writing. It would, therefore, be pointless to modernize the dialogue. Shakespeare’s plays ARE the dialogue.

Buy,Download, Or Stream William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet! Click Here

* Although this film – compared with other renditions of the play – is decidedly recent, clear elements do contribute to a sort of timely ambiguity. The cars, guns, drugs, and music suggest 1996 (or thereabouts), whereas the gothic mansions, the ball, the feuding families, and the oppressive presence of the Church seem somewhat anachronistic. I deem this ambiguity speaks to the universality of Shakespeare’s work. Does it even matter when this play takes region? Have hot-blooded teenagers changed that remarkable over the years?

* Lastly, the ambience of Lurhmann’s film is intoxicating: zipping, choppy cinematography, an over-abundance of gaudy electric lighting, and an engrossing soundtrack. It’s very spellbinding in an adolescent sort of design. Anyone who does not gain the scene – where DiCaprio is dragging on a cigarette against an orangey sunscape, with Radiohead’s “Talk Note Host” slowly pulsing in the background – sentimentally sexy – well, you must not remember what it’s like to be 15.

All in all, this is an ingenious come to a classic text – not to mention an gripping film.

William Shakespeare’s classic `Romeo + Juliet’ is probably one of the most influential pieces of literature ever recorded. You can feel its presence and influence breathing life into unbiased about everything we read, search for or listen to these days. With a yarn this classic, this necessary to fresh cinema it becomes something a bit wary to tackle it at its core and `remake’ it from scratch. One may be a tad hesitant to embrace its modern shape and compose and rightfully so. When you stare at the track describe for remakes it becomes apparent that in general what was once golden should be left well enough alone. In Romeo + Juliet’s case though this is a reimagining so magical it surpasses the new and becomes a momentous fragment in the history books of cinema. Yes, Baz Luhrmann single handedly breathes a whole modern life into this adaptation, handing to his audience a masterful and experimental film that never lets us out of its purchase.

The first thing that Luhrmann did apt was stick to the new text. A lot of people initially balked at the fact that the dialog was not updated along with the setting but I felt that artistically it was a distinguished grander feat to have the current dialog kept intact. The fact that each and every actor slips into this plan of speaking fluently and without utter is an ode to some gigantic talent indeed. No one seems out of site of phoning it. Each and every actor handles the difficult wording marvelously. The next thing Luhrmann did apt was trashing his setting. What I mean by this is that he didn’t go the easy route and perform this posh and shapely but rather he played everything down, creating an almost gritty and dirty feeling to the surroundings. This is the future and the future is bleak.

The best thing that Luhrmann did though was casting Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes in the lead roles. At the time DiCaprio was slowly becoming a credible actor and Danes was honest becoming known. Neither of them were quote-unquote household names or completely bankable yet but they both had proven they could act. Here though we glean to watch how well. To this day I peaceful firmly possess that this is Leonardo’s finest performance. Both he and Danes masterfully say their characters. Never has Romeo or Juliet felt so alive, so genuine and so relatable. Their tragic esteem affair is so arresting, so intelligent and so breathtaking. There are moments between them of pure beauty and strength that I’m appalled their performances didn’t garner more awards attention.

The rest of the cast is equally as impressive, especially the likes of Harold Perrineau (of `Lost’ fame) who plays Romeo’s best friend Mercutio. His performance is curious and flamboyant and adds a lot to the atmosphere of the film. John Leguizamo is memorable as Tybolt, Juliet’s cousin, and Pete Postlethwaite is unbelievable as Father Laurence. Paul Sorvino stands out for me as Juliet’s father Fulgencio Capulet. His performance is brutal and intense and sends chills down my spine in scenes.

`William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet’ has never looked as friendly as it does here, telling the fable of forbidden admire and tragic circumstance that brings two families to their knees and teaches us a famous lesson about forgiveness and tolerance. Baz Luhrmaan outdoes himself here, delivering a original twist on a well-behaved classic complete with a fair color palate and an impressive soundtrack that adds layers of emotion, whether soft and touching or crisp and bewitching (one reason this `Music Edition’ is so worth the upgrade) . It’s not very often that the remake stands above its source material but Luhrmann’s masterpiece is fair that film.

I have a soft status for “Lilies of the Field.” One of my common teachers first introduced me to this movie. I’ll try (and probably fail) to be honest in my review.

First, and most obviously, Sidney Poitier is extraordinary as Homer Smith. Homer is a runt larger than life. Yet Poitier brings him off as not only believable, he turns Homer into an everyman of sorts.

Beyond Poitier things find a shrimp shaky.

Lilia Skala is impressive indeed as the mother genuine. Her harsh seeming exterior conceals a tender heart. The dignity she uses to deal with Smith’s first leaving and return is truly endearing.

That said, the other nuns and many of the villagers arrive off a cramped too cardboard-cut-outish for my taste. There is also some radiant “sixties” acting (where you can visibly gawk the actor acting) . Luckily, these flaws are easily overcome by the colossal heart of this film.

At its core, Lilies of the Field is about resurrection and unexpected fulfillment. Coming together under the guidance of an unseen hand (”he develop the chapel”), disparate people regain more to life than what had seemed to be there before. The scene with the Priest at the waste unruffled gets me after seeing it more than a few times.

This is an exceptional DVD transfer of an exceptional movie. Criterion has done a fair job of restoring Charade to its quick-witted glory. The film is presented in its new 1.85:1 aspect ratio. The print is distinct, crisp, and delicate to look. You feel as if you can arrive out and touch the actors.

And what actors! The film features the dashing older version of Cary Grant and the youthful gamine Audrey Hepburn, with enough chemistry between them to ignite a fireworks factory. The situation is a convoluted and flimsy trifle about cool war scrutinize shenanigans, with cases of improper identity and episodes of grave grief for Miss Audrey. But Cary, the classic noble guy in cad’s clothing, is there to set aside the day. In addition to which he provides chaste romance that sizzles beneath the civility.

Audio commentary is provided by director Stanley Donen and screenwriter Peter Stone. While gripping and laughable in spots, it does coast a bit over the length of the film. It may be better to check it out when you gain something in the film that you would like to hear dissected. Otherwise, you’d be better to stick with the savory, corny dialogue spoken in the dulcet tones of Cary and Audrey. The soundtrack music is to also to be savored, done up in classic ’60s stare movie style by the movie maestro Henry Mancini.

If you have nothing to do on a rainy day and believe a DVD player, this is the movie you want to have on hand to pop in the machine and recount you from care. It’s a keeper (and it comes in a keeper case!) .

I got this DVD for Christmas and I wasn’t disappointed. Stanley Donen, director of musicals such as “Singin’ In The Rain” starring Gene Kelly, brought together Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn (who looks intellectual, as always) in this wonderfully-written tale about a Parisian widow (Hepburn) who is being pursued by three uncertain men (two of which are played by George Kennedy – an splendid “heavy” – and James Coburn at his most menacing) who want to rep out about a gigantic sum of money her listless husband supposedly had. Grant is the profitable stranger but eventually you launch to wonder: is he working with these men? Does he want the money for himself? Or is he really the magnificent, older man Audrey finds herself falling in esteem with?

Enhanced by a lush come by by the slow Henry Mancini, photographed beautifully in Paris and containing generous acting and deliciously tainted dialogue by writer Peter Stone, “Charade” is a film that should be in every serious DVD collection. Grant is older but better, like shapely wine, and Ms. Hepburn … well there have been millions of words old to report her and I can’t add to them other than to say the world lost a trustworthy talent at her death.

You’ll delight in “Charade” for a long, long time.

This production was originally filmed as a musical for theatrical release. The songs were edited out and this version of “Spacious Expectations” was released to television instead. Michael York does a credible job as Pip, and Sarah Miles is valid as the snobby Estella.

I am a high school English teacher and showed the DVD after reading the original. It was grand!!! Many lines were the same and the chronicle set was the same (comely considerable) . Awesome original. Awesome DVD. Thanks

Truly one of the greatest of all movie stars and a very underated actor this movie glows with Cagney’s talent in his depiciton of the life of Lon Chayney. Unlike so many hollywood bios of the time this disappear tends to steer away from the usual sanitization of a character and instead confronts the darker side of Chaney, a man beset by torments. Poignant, considerable in it’s day with the head on explore at how deaf people were treated, and indeed with the tragic aspects of Chayney’s first marriage. For me this movie stands the test of time exceptionally well, thanks in no petite measure to the performances, notably the conflict between Chaney and his first wife wonderfully played by Dorothy Malone. This is one of the sizable ones!

This is a unbelievable bio pic of silver veil broad, Lon Chaney, a character actor of sizable renown during the mute film epoch. All but one of his films were mute. Due to his ability to alter his appearance and play many roles, he eventually became known as “the man of a thousand faces”. It is ironic that this man who would forge a meteoric rise in the mute film industry was born to deaf quiet parents in 1883.

The film shows the impact that being the son of deaf still parents would have on his life in those unenlightened times. Lon Chaney (James Cagney) started his acting career as a stage performer in vaudeville, where he was a approved pantomime. His first wife, the pleasing Cleva Creighton (Dorothy Malone), was a chanteuse who had dreams of her have.

Unfortunately, once Lon Chaney and she discovered that she was to have a baby, their happiness would turn to bitterness and inflame, due to Cleva’s shock at discovering that his parents were deaf mutes. Cleva and Lon Chaney would go on to have a son named Creighton, but she later caused a colossal scandal early in their son’s life with a very public attempt at suicide that would change all their lives forever.

This scandal was to destroy Lon Chaney’s stage career, and it sounded the death knell of his marriage. He ultimately divorced Cleva, who had abandoned both him and their son. The divorce resulted, for a time, in his tragic and heartbreaking separation from his beloved, young son. Chaney was to go on to reclaim his career, as well as his son, but would do so on film, rather than on stage, becoming an extremely common still film actor.

Lon Chaney was also a doting father who remarried in order to provide a good home for his son. His second wife was a extinct chorus girl named Hazel (Janet Greer) . She was a woman who was to present to be a loving step-mother to Creighton and a devoted wife to Lon Chaney. Always in the background, however, was the specter of Cleva, who was never to gain any of her ragged glory as a chanteuse and would live a life reduced in circumstances, as a result. She would live to regret her abandonment of their son.

Meanwhile, Lon Chaney was getting ready to purchase talking pictures by storm. While unruffled in the prime of his life and at the peak of his film career, he was struck by a terminal illness that was to bring down the curtain for the last time. Bequeathing his acting legacy to his son, Creighton, who would later beget his effect in film, renamed as Lon Chaney, Jr., Lon Chaney would leave the world at the relatively young age of forty-seven.

James Cagney is terrific in the role of Lon Chaney, creating a three dimensional portrait of a man whose childhood was to influence him is so clear a arrangement. A veritable chameleon that was able to change his appearance at will, Lon Chaney would infuse the characters that he played with remarkable feeling and emotion. His remarkable performances would transcend the silence of the films, making him one of the tremendous character actors of the tranquil film era. James Cagney sums it up best when he performs a bit of the Chaney role in the soundless film, “The Miracle”. If Lon Chaney played it half so well, it is small wonder that he was so current.

Dorothy Malone is kindly as the comely but shallow Cleva, a woman who would inflict great suffering on those who loved her, but who would also, as a result, endure distinguished suffering herself, eventually realizing all that she had lost. Janet Greer is perfect in the role of Hazel, Lon Chaney’s warm and loving second wife, who would savor and raise Creighton as if he were her maintain son, thereby changing all their lives for the better.

The supporting cast is also expedient with salubrious performances by Jim Backus as Lon Chaney’s agent and publicist. A very young Robert Evans, a staunch life future film mogul, plays the role of studio head Irving Thalberg, a man with whom Lon Chaney would have a long term professional relationship. Evans is surprisingly titillating in the microscopic role. Overall, this is simply a film that those with an interest in Lon Chaney will relish, as will those who simply adore a advantageous, well-acted film.
